by Lorraine Hansberry
Set just before the Civil Rights and Women's movements, this powerful and beloved play tells a striking and poignant story of an African American family living in a crowded apartment on Chicago's south side in the 1950s. When the Younger family receives a large life insurance check, the promise of a better life seems to be just around the corner. But the family struggles with conflicting ideas about how to use the money, and their plans to buy a home in an all-white neighborhood are thwarted by racial intolerance.
